First 5 Ventura County supports early childhood obesity prevention through community partnerships that emphasize the importance of healthy eating and regular activity. Recently, researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine found obesity prevention to be most successful among young children. Their study concluded that obese children between 2 to 5 years old that participated in a program focused on changing eating and activity habits, responded seven times more favorably than those between 6 to 21 years old.

Researchers believe these results suggest that obesity screening of toddlers and kindergarteners is a worthwhile effort. Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics endorses obesity screening of young children. Moreover, obesity screening may increase dialogue between parents and doctors on the importance of educating young children early on healthy eating and exercise.

During the year long program, families were provided with a pedometer and a journal to track activity and eating patterns of their child. Researchers recommended that children engage in active play for 60 minutes or more daily, restrict screen time to no more than two hours, and limit the number of sugary beverages consumed.

First 5 Ventura County encourages healthy children and families through collaboration with programs and partners such as: A LEAN VC, the Good for Kids Project, and ReThink Your Drink Campaign. In addition, F5VC funds a full-time nutrition educator to teach parents, providers and young children about healthy eating and active living.
